ORGANIZE A QUIZ IN PUBS, CLUBS
& EATING PLACES
Over the last few decades’ quizzes have been one of the cheapest, easiest
and most popular ways for a pub to attract regular trade on a quiet night
of the week. There is a great demand for cheap entertainment with all the
eating and drinking houses looking for something different to attract
customers, especially Mid Week.
Many quiz
books, manuals and information is available both in hard copy and online,
but we advise creating your own, and building value and copyright in your
own materials. Research the papers every day and look for items and
questions that provide not just current content but are long lasting
questions that will stay in peoples minds. Questions with humorous content
are always popular and with an inventive and creative mind you can
restructure questions to have a more interesting slant.
You can take this business a bit further if you do the necessary research,
by compiling various quiz books that you can sell at the event. These quiz
books don’t have to be fancy just comb bound or in a business type
presenter or folder. Alternately they can be on CD or floppy disc.
You will have
to do some serious marketing to get the venues and this will involve
either some tele-marketing or just pounding the streets. We suggest you
offer to the venues either a fixed fee, or an opportunity where they don’t
pay anything and you charge each person a small fee to participate. In our
experience people do not enter quizzes for financial prizes and are more
appreciate of a framed certificate, a goody bag, a beer round, or other
small token. You should be flexible in your approach to this and discuss
with the owner what he feels will go down best. In all situations we
advise you to be creative and look for an original approach.
Place or get the staff to, distribute or hang posters advertising your
quiz night; start time, etc in the venue a week or so before the event.
There is a
trend towards quizzes being held in people’s homes at private parties and
you should look to exploit this market.

You need to give yourself an identity and a relevant name such as
“theQuizQueen” or “Quiz’s’Rus”. Consider investing in some type of PA
equipment, you can usually buy cheaply on eBay. Also consider type of
dress relevant to the image you wish to portray, the very least should be
a shirt with your name on it.
At the Event:
Ensure you write down your procedure and the rules
and procedure you will be adapting throughout the event.
Look for
different themes for each night and always try to include a local section
and if possible some questions on the venue where you are.
Arrange your quiz in rounds, say 10 rounds, arrange a short break after
each round so people can replenish their drinks, (the owner will
appreciate that) and use the time to mark the answers, (you may like to
consider recruiting a volunteer assistant for this). Some quizmasters ask
the teams to mark each other’s sheets, however we feel that this tends to
devalue the seriousness of the quiz and of course is open to abuse.
Before starting a new round give out the answers to the last round and
announce each teams score and standings with a jokey element to it. Have
an interval after 5 rounds, and arrange with the owner to lay on some
light refreshments, during the interval give your contestants a puzzler or
some type of cryptic puzzle that they can do while replenishing their
drinks and taking a nibble.
TIPS & TRICKS
After each round ask if anyone wants any questions repeating
Always place yourself, in a comfortable position away from the bar areas.
No Mobile phones allowed to be used by team.
Announce, “We will be starting soon” a couple of times before you are
ready.
Avoid any confusion by categorising each round and announcing that
category
Include the original question when you read out the answers.
The five most popular sections are, entertainment, sport, general & Local
knowledge and popular music, stick with these unless at a specific
specialised event.
