Are
more expensive pet foods actually better? We spent some time looking
at high priced dog foods verses the lower priced dog foods. What we
found is they both contain largely the same ingredients.
Sure
you may not have ever heard of the cheaper brand of dog food or you
may think it "tastes inferior" to the high priced food. Don't let
that get to you. All that means is the cheaper foods didn't have to
spend the big time marketing dollars to make you think their
products are better. Instead of spending millions of dollars in
advertising and marking up the price of their pet food, they keep
their prices low.
As far
as flavour, we have found our dogs like the cheaper food better than
the pricey foods as well. We actually purchased 8 small bags of dog
food. 4 were expensive brands and 4 were cheaper brands. We put each
in a small cool whip dish and placed all 8 in front of our dogs (who
are very picky by the way). The result? They scoffed down 3 of the 4
cheaper brands and only 1 of the 4 expensive brands. I guess the
fancy colors and fancy graphics on the bag do not really matter to
dogs after all.
We now
buy dog food in 40 pound bags at $12 per bag. This last us about 1
month for our 2 dogs. We used to buy a higher priced (to remain
anonymous) brand in 20 pound bags for $17 each ($34 per
month).
Annual savings are $264 with just this one switch, and
our dogs like the taste even more than the expensive
brand!
