great because they are easy to create, free to distribute and have a high
profit margin.
If you know guns, you may have the
skills needed to be a gunsmith. Your clients will be hunters,
collectors, and firearm enthusiasts. You must have the appropriate
tools, a broad knowledge of guns and how they work, and a respect
for safety procedures. Required beginning skills include the ability
to:
· Repair, clean, and customize
· Fit and finish stocks - mount telescopic sights
· Design and install metallic rifle sights
· Custom load ammunition
In addition the basics, you could locate needed parts and restore
antiques guns. As a Gunsmith you must be able to do detailed hand
and machine work to you client's specifications. You will work with
metal and wood components as well as a variety of guns and rifles.
Before you get started, check local zoning restrictions and gets
some training. Even if you have been handling guns for years, formal
training will provide you with additional information and polish
that will help you earn a local reputation. For training courses,
conduct and Internet search and look through your local yellow
pages.
As a gunsmith, you will charge $25 - $75 per hour for your time. You
can charge more at for antique restoration or unique requests.
Business overhead will consist of tools, equipment, and advertising.
You will market your business in trade magazines. You could get
additional publicity by writing articles for local and national
publications. Word of mouth will be the most reliable form of
advertising for you because your success as a gunsmith will be built
from credibility and trust.
