A mobile notary public business
allows you to work the hours you want, freeing you up to tend to
family or personal goals. Before you can get started, you will have
to pass a state examination to become a commissioned notary public.
You can take the course online, in a classroom, or by mail. You can
expand your services by becoming a signing agent. A signing agent is
a notary who prepares documents and does other administrative work
on location. Various locations where you might find yourself are
airports, banks, retirement homes, private homes, and places of
business.
When working as a signing agent, companies will contact you to
set up appointments with for you and their client. The documents may
be faxed or sent by courier, but in some cases you will have to pick
them up from the hiring company yourself. Once you have the
documents, you will take them to the requested location. After you
briefly go over the documents with the client, you will witness the
signing of the documents, notarize where needed, and have the client
document any required receipt of service. You will be responsible
for proper distribution of originals and copies.
As a multi-tasking mobile notary public and signing agent, you
will charge your clients for the convenience of your coming to them
or to their customers. A flat fee of $50 - $75 can be charged for
the combination of witnessing their signing of documents, performing
administrative tasks, record keeping, and notary duties.
Before you are commissioned, you may need training. For complete
information on training and also on requirements and
responsibilities, contact your state's Notary Board and request a
copy of their Notary Handbook. In most cases, these are available
online.
Once you are commissioned, you can work in a variety of fields,
including:
· Medical and Legal
· Real Estate
· Finance
· Insurance
· Business
Start up costs include training, related fees, and general home
office expenses. You can market your service by contacting agencies
that use notary services. Ads in business publications, newsletters,
and direct mail are all productive marketing methods.
